russian government to spend USD 3.8 bn on new football stadiums for the 2018 FIFA worldcup

Russian finance minister Alexej Kudrin said russia's government will spend $ 3.8 bn to build new stadiums for the 2018 football worldcup. He also expects the private sector to contribute at least another $ 20 bn.
On top of that, the russian government will spend another $ 6 bn on renewal of infrastructure for the worldcup.

Zürich trainstation underground works

The old Zürich mainstation is, just like Stuttgarts, a dead-end terminal. It is squeezed between the lake Zürich and the Limmat river. With more than 3.000 Trains every day it is also one of the busiest terminals in the world. To allow the predicted growth in train movement, the swiss railways SBB, the swiss government and the Kanton of Zürich have invested 2 bn swiss franks and dug a tunnel under the river to open the dead-end. on November 22nd, the tunnel drill "Heidi" had its break through. The tunnel is 4,5 km long. One of the main challenges was not to drill into the river and not to destroy zürich residents basements (the local government was very pleased that no wine-cellars were destroyed so far...)

Bauma China exceeds all expectations

The 5th Bauma China in shanghai has closed its gates on sunday with new records regarding visitors, exhibitors and exhibition space. Visitor numbers went up 33 per cent from last Bauma China to 150.000. Top ten visitor origins were: China, Korea, India, Japan, Russia, Malaysia, Brazil, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Australia.The highest number of exhibitors came from China (some 700), Germany (154), followed by italy (107) and the US.

fascinating translucent concrete

A engineering office and lab has invented a new concrete with embedded light transmitting optical fibres. The fibres allow light from one side to go through the concrete and come out on the other side. Of course, one cannot see details of whats happening on the other side but it looks like light and shadow can be viewed quite good. The technology is apparently not yet ready fo insitu processing but large precast concrete blocks and precast wall elements are available directly from the producer. They even produce panels with individualized patterns of light transmitting fibres. I am very much looking forward to see the first real project realised with that product.

News Update

- Deripaska's "Basic Element" Buying back shares of austrian Strabag.
- Calatrava archs poured at New York's ground zero rebuilding site.
- MAXXI / National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome by Zaha Hadid

Basic Element / Strabag
Oleg Deripaska's Firm Basic Element is buying back 17 per cent of the shares it had sold to investors last year during the crisis to finance other projects. In return, Strabag has agreed to buy a 17 per cent stake in Deripaska's road construction firm "Transtoi". Basic Element has the option to buy another 8 per cent of Strabag until july 2014.
Haselsteiner, Strabag's CEO holds via his family holding 29,5 per cent of the company, another third of the shares are held by Raiffeisen Group and Uniqa. 23 per cent of the shares are free float.
With the deal, Strabag hopes to become stronger in the russian construction market, which is recovering after the crisis. Especially the road construction deal seems to be a strategic investment for Strabag. Strabag is planning to be heavily involved in the construction of infrastructure, hotels and residential building in the olympic winter games resort of Sotchi.

Worlds tallest wooden building to be erected in Austria

Not far from the "Nordwesthaus" (see my post about Nordwesthaus here), in the triangle of austria, germany and switzerland, at the shore of lake constance, the tallest wooden building is being planned. The "LifeCycleTower" is put together of prefabricated wooden beams and concrete slabds. With a planned height of about 100 m (ca. 300 ft.) it will surpass the existing talles wooden building in London.
The Planning and executing Firm "CREE" is a spin off of Austrian construction company Rhomberg. Cree aims to build a big useable structure with the lowest possible carbon footprint.

UK construction largest contributor to GDP growth in Q3.

According to a report by UK's Office of National Statistics, GDP grew by 0.8 per cent in Q3 2010. The UK's construction industry contributed almost one third to this growth. Compared to Q3 2009, the construction industry has grown by 11 per cent.

Cement producers in former soviet states looking towards a brighter sky

After a reduction of nearly 20 per cent in cement consumption in 2009, the per capita demand of cement has come back in 2010 and the future looks even better. With a market potential of 260 million inhabitants, the CIS countries are larger than most western european people imagine. Cement producers are boosting their output now to be ready to react to future rising market demands.
Many of the CIS countries (Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Georgia and Armenia) are rich in minerals, some have oil reserves and gas. To be able to turn those assets into money, governments are spending massively on infrastructure.
Personally, i think the CIS countries have been underestimated by western companies for a long time.

Sochi 2014 winter games will break record in sponsorship funds

In a moscow times article of october 2010, the games chief Dmitry Chernyshenko stated that funding for the 2014 winter games in Sochi will probably exceed all historic winter games in revenue by commercial sponsors. He claims that already now sponsorship revenues have topped 1 billion USD. The games in Beijing had a sponsorship revenue of 1.2 billion USD. In addition that, several more billions are spent on infrastructure.

Housing market in Poland on track

According to PMR (http://www.constructionpoland.com), the delivery of residencial housing has risen in september 2010 by 4.1 per cent compared to september 2009. Compared to August 2010, the completion of projects has expanded by 11 per cent. However, compared to last year's september, new residential projects are 1.7 per cent down. Still, investors have obtained more construction permits than last september. Altogether, the outlook for the polish market seems to be rather promising.

Video of emplica long-term test

Maybe it is more fun to look at pictures when there's some nice music in the background...

Here is the slideshow of the test. As stated in a previous post. the results are better than expected. We can't find any significant difference between the first and the 25th pour. What changed a lot though was the damage that can be seen on the lower right corner. it has become deeper as with every pour some wood fibres stick to the concrete and get torn out of the form.
The emplica plywood repair system apparently does its job well.

Long-Term Test with emplica Plicafix on concrete form

After 12 Weeks, we have some preliminary results of our long term test with a standard plicafix 60 inserted into a wisaform birch plywood form.

We are testing the development of the concrete surface with each pour. Up to now, we have poured 25 times.

Test setup:

- plicafix60 plywood repair spot on Wisaform birch
- finegrain concrete (0-8mm), very little form release oil.
- concrete stays in form for 72 hrs.

Results:

- No significant change in concrete surface
- changes of surface mainly occur according to liquidity of concrete and amount of oil applied

Sissi does it!

Sissi, a giant tunnel drill, did it today at 14:17 cet underneath miles of rock. The breakthrough of the worlds longest tunnel was seen by workers and politicians. The project itself started 15 years ago and will go on until 2017, when the first trains are expected to pass through.
The Gotthard Alptransit is a 57 km long tunnel through the center of the swiss alps. Due to government regulations that demand cutting heavy road traffic from 1,2 million trucks to 0,65 million trucks per year this tunnel was necessary to carry the commercial transport through switzerland on the north-south route.
