Images of concrete with emplica plywood repair spots vs. scratch

The below images show the difference between a non-repaired part of formwork (left) with a typical rebar damage and on the right side a similar rebar damage having been repaired with two emplica plywood repair spots. The photos were taken from adifferent angle to show how smooth the surface of the concrete is where the emplica plywood repair spots had been put. the scratch is about 4 inch long and about 1/2 inch deep.

why the Burj Kalifa looks how it looks

We have learned it very early in school: a tripod usually stands more stable on the ground than a cruciformed (four-legged) structure. This article on McGrawHill Construction explains the physical advantages of the Burj Kalifa Building in Dubai.

Construction in Europe still up

According to KHL's "Construction Europe Barometer", Construction levels in Europe have fallen slightly in August to a +12,5 per cent, from 19,2 in July and 25 in June. Wether this has to do with holiday season or a general slowing down is not sure. Read the full report here and/or participate in the survey here: www.cebarometer.eu

Crazy Buildings

This collection of crazy buildings must have driven a few civil engineers into psychiatry!

fun to watch and not of the ordninary:

Corbusier and Burri in Zürich

The Bellerive Muesum in Zürich has an exhibition of photographs taken by Rene Burri. Burri started to follow Corbuiser's work in 1955 with his camera. This exhibition shows a large part of images Burri took of Cobuiser's work, Corbusier himself and working progress.
The exhibition will go on until November 07th 2010.

The rock-house

Funny little House inbetween rocks in Portugal.
More info and images here

Centre Pompidou Metz

This new museum is an impressive piece of woodwork and concrete. Please especially have a closer look of the roof construction!

The world famous Centre Pompidou in Paris is known for being one of the first structures, where the architect put all pipes outside of the building. the walls are hidden behind what is usually inside a house. When it was built it created quite a noise among people. The museum has now opened a "satellite" museum in the city of metz in the north of france (the Guggenheim Museum did something similar in Bilbao, spain, to be seen here).

Well, here is the article and the slideshow about the centre pompidou metz

Santiago Calatrava

I was still a teenager, when i first got hold of a book about Santiago Calatrava and his architecture.
Since then, i have been a fan of his work. He does things with concrete that look impossible, almost like freezing water while it pours out of a bottle. The formwork to realize his projects are amazing pieces of engineering.
Please have a look at one of his projects, the St. Exupery Airport Lyon Train station, built 1989-1994.

Of course, Calatrava's style has not changed too much over the years, but i am still amazed by what he does. one of his latest projects, the PATH Terminal in NYC is not too different from the above mentioned TGV station at Lyon's Airport.

See more of calatravas work at this unofficial website: www.calatrava.info

lucky as i am, we have a trainstation here in Zürich designed by Calatrava in 1982-1984 as well. The "Bahnhof Stadelhofen". Some information about this station here.

The leaning Tower of Pisa is not the most leaning any more

In Abu Dhabi, a fantastically leaning structure which will later include a 5-star Hotel, is being finished.
The "Capital Gate" In Abu Dhabi leans 18 degrees towards the west. The Top is completely off center...

As it happens, football is played in big structures...
